It’s summer time! April – June 2023

Hey there! How’s it going? The sun is shining, and it’s finally summer season! I hope you’re enjoying the warmer weather as much as I am. 😊

In this quarterly insight, I wanted to continue sharing some exciting behind-the-scenes content for chapter 9 of our comic. Today, let’s dive into the fascinating world of storyboards.

Storyboards are like hidden treasures in the realm of creative productions. They’re the essential first step in bringing a team of artists together and establishing a clear vision. Storyboards capture the essence of the script, portraying the look and feel of each moment. A well-executed storyboard not only matches the written script but also vividly depicts how the story unfolds, moment to moment. It serves as inspiration for artists in later stages of production, ensuring that the original vision of the story remains intact.

To illustrate the importance of storyboarding in comic book production, I’ve prepared some examples. These examples showcase the process and demonstrate how crucial the storyboard pass is. Without storyboarding, the comic layout artist would struggle to determine panel placements, fitting them neatly within the page boundaries while creating a visually engaging experience when reading two pages side by side.

As you can see, numerous small changes are made between the storyboard and the comic layout pass. Character poses, camera angles, and panel alignments are refined during the layout phase. However, the flow of the eyes following speech bubbles and the central focus per open book are established during the storyboarding process.

I hope you found this update insightful and enjoyed our discussion on the importance of storyboards. Stay tuned for more exciting updates in the future!

Until next time, keep on creating!
