Reflecting on January – March 2021

Here we are again: Welcome to the quarterly flashback where we take a moment to celebrate what has been achieved during the last 3 months and what I need to learn and improve on for DUALITY comic!

Episode updates and Patreon posts

Looking back we have posted 5 episode updates and didn’t miss any monthly Patreon post updates. This is happening while the gaming industry has finally figured out how to deal with COVID19 and projects are raining in sporadically. So I don’t know how busy it will be from week to week.

Script writing for V1C8

I never feel very confident about writing scripts because – for a visual person – written descriptions are redundant when you know “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Last year, the script writing process nearly tripled. I was planning to finish it in a month, and 3 months later I barely made it through a 7th draft… So this year, I’m going to trust my guts and keep the script writing in a looser state and carry through to storyboards. Since I always end up making adjustments after finalizing the script, I may as well embrace the nature of the creative process. Please wish me good luck and to make it through alive this time, so that production will not get delayed and affect episode updates!

Character designs for V1C8

Because the story beats have been mostly decided, character designs can get started in parallel with drafting scripts | storyboards. Here’s a recent one just finished this week. Darren Anderson has helped me with coloring different versions. Hope you like it!

Character profile:

Zhurong is GongGong’s biological father, he’s the master of fire for the human tribe

R&D on using 3D for 2D comic art

I’ve been wanting to do R&D so badly! Been following the latest updates on the power of real-time rendering techniques demonstrated in Unreal, Unity and Dream. Reality has taught me: For creative projects that don’t affect immediate outcome, I just have to CARVE OUT time to work on it. So yeah, it will happen before the production phase for V1C8 starts. Just a matter of juggling priorities.

Until next time, stay tuned!
