Reflecting on July – September 2020

Three months have flown by since our last blog post on reflection. I hope you and your family are well 😀

Would like to dedicate this week’s update to share some insights from making DUALITY comic. Hope it can offer you some insight when making your own creative projects!

Where to find a place to offload the brain?

I tried many tools earlier this year to help with managing DUALITY comic production: Google calendar, Trello, Team Gantt and a few more. And find Notion to be the tool for comic production and my own weekly schedule.

I can easily access any blog post draft at the tip of my finger. Keeping things organized and on track within a mini-database, filtering/sorting information any way I wanted. Saving templates for future usage and setting alarm notifications to avoid missing a post publishing date.

During this process, I find composing social media posts is a task I keep procrastinating because finalizing bi-weekly comic posts on the website; preparing content for composing monthly Art Blasts posts + Top Secret posts; in addition to producing content for the next chapter and drafting the scripts for future chapters has taken all my energy.

Moving forwards, I will find ways to simplify the workflow for different tasks and spare time to update social media posts.

Last but not least, Notion has a Dark mode. For anyone who has issues with bright screens, you can turn on the Dark mode to reduce eye fatigue.

If this sounds interesting to you and you want to try out Notion, here’s the official website: https://www.notion.so/personal

How often to reflect on the creative process?

I tried to do daily reflection as many creative professionals suggested and followed very detailed templates. The result is a prefect every day reflect for the first 2 months; followed by only on weekdays for the next 3 months; followed by no reflect at all for the following 3 months.

What I learnt from this experience is that reflect daily is not sustainable for how I work. Towards the end of the 3 months where I only reflect on weekdays, I find my words become repetitive and doing reflection itself becomes a boring task I find no joy in and only do so that I can check it off my to do list because I did it. In game design’s term, I have managed to optimize the “fun” out of the game.

Since the beginning of September, instead of any kind of daily reflect, I choose to schedule a weekly reflect instead. Sometime at the end of the week, I grab a coffee and comfortably leaning against a giant DOMO plush, I simply drop down a few bullet points on what works and where the opportunities to learn are.

So far I haven’t missed a session (It’s only been 4 sessions … so we will see). It’s a much more enjoyable process, compared to following a very detailed template. My mind feels relaxed and I always end up writing down more points than originally planned.

Shared a few things about how I fight against procrastination in this reflection post. I hope you had a great time reading this post! Stay tuned ^_^
