Reflecting on April – June 2020

Every quarter of a year,  let’s share some insights from making DUALITY comic. Hope it can help you with making your creative project!

Be ready to deal with any size of lemon that life throws at you

2020 is a special year, changes are happening around us and shaping everyone’s daily routines. Hearing bad news can easily affect mood, especially for any creative individual.

So how can we deal with our worrying mind when the outside world is changing so fast? To breakdown this big question, I asked myself three smaller questions:

  1. What is my dream project? <Something that can bring joy when spending hours working on it>
  2. Where is my north star? <principles/vision that guides me>
  3. Who is my competition and why do they do what they do?

And here are my answers to these questions:

  1. My dream project is a project that allows me to fully express myself through visual storytelling
  2. My North Star: Make GOOD art
  3. My competition: Any well-established artist in the industry who still restlessly pursues art in their spare-time. Such individuals enjoy the process of problem-solving while crafting their vision

To give you a bit more context to the answer for the North Star question:

Many years ago, I watched the Neil Gaiman’s commencement speech to the University of the Arts graduating class of 2012 (9:40 – 12:10)

It gave me the strength to keep growing and encouraged me to keep creating ever since

Keep making GOOD art is an artist’s responsibility

Not missing an update is important, because it is a promise made between a creator and their audience. People give us trust by investing time into reading what we create and it better be GOOD.

Especially during this challenging time, when everyone is worrying about their future and their family’s future, we will keep creating good content for our audience – even if there’s only ONE left.

Thank you for reading this post! Stay tuned ^_^
